In the highly gifted landscape and in the world of the highly sensitive and synaesthetic persons, there is a wide choice of ethnic and cultural diversity. While giftedness, by definition, exists equally in all populations, we are still a long way from recognising this in practice. Although it is universally accepted that gifted individuals are found amongst people from all cultural, ethnic and socio-economic groups, there is not enough first-hand information globally, how indigenous people define the terms intelligence and giftedness. Also, how they live their intelligence and giftedness in interacting with other tribal members in everyday life.

Die Vereinten Nationen (United Nations Organization, UNO) haben die frühere Bezeichnung »Ureinwohner« durch »indigene Völker« („indigenous peoples«) ersetzt. Der Begriff »Indigene Völker« wurde erstmals 1986 vom UN-Sonderberichterstatter José Martínez-Cobo verwendet und bedeutet in etwa »in ein Land geboren«. Eine völkerrechtlich verbindliche Definition gibt es nicht. Nachzulesen ist in einem Beitrag vom 5.8.2019 der Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung, dass »als indigene Völker meist die Nachfahren der Erstbewohnerinnen und -bewohner einer Region bezeichnet werden, welche das gegenwärtige Territorium eines Landes bereits bewohnten, bevor Menschen mit einer anderen Kultur oder aus anderen Teilen der Welt dort ankamen. In vielen Fällen unterwarfen oder vertrieben die Neuankömmlinge die dort ansässigen Völker und versetzten sie durch Eroberung, Besiedlung oder mit anderen Mitteln in eine untergeordnete oder koloniale Situation. Von der nicht-indigenen Bevölkerung eines Landes unterscheiden sich Indigene in der Regel durch eine eigene Kultur z.B. in Sprache, Religion oder Gesellschaftsorganisation. Eine Bevölkerungsgruppe gilt zudem als indigen, wenn sie sich selbst als solche beschreibt (Selbstidentifikation) und von der Gemeinschaft der indigenen Völker anerkannt wird (Fremdidentifikation).«

Die Vereinten Nationen (UN) schätzen, dass weltweit 370 Millionen Indigene mit 5000 verschiedenen Kulturen in etwa 90 Staaten leben. Sie machen knapp fünf Prozent der Weltbevölkerung aus. Von den 7000 gesprochenen Sprachen weltweit werden mehr als 4000 von indigenen Völkern gesprochen.

Die mit Abstand größte Gruppe besteht aus über 100 Millionen in Indien lebenden Adivasi, eine Sammelbezeichnung für verschiedene indigene Völker – dies geht aus einer Volkszählung in Indien aus dem Jahr 2011 hervor. Eine weitere große Gruppe stellen die Amazigh (Berber) mit zehn bis 30 Millionen, die vor allem in den nordafrikanischen Ländern Marokko, Algerien, Tunesien, Libyen und Mauretanien leben. Bekannte indigene Völker sind auch die Samen in Teilen Skandinaviens, die Mansen in Westsibirien, die Maori in Neuseeland, die Ainu in Japan, die Uiguren in China, die Aceh in Indonesien, die Hmong in Laos, die San (Buschmänner) im südlichen Afrika, die Quechua in Peru und Bolivien, die Maya in Guatemala und Mexiko, die Dineh (Navajo) in Nordamerika, die Inuit in Kanada oder die Aborigines in Australien.“ Siehe: https://amnesty-indigene.de/begriff/

In der Hochbegabtenlandschaft gibt es eine große Auswahl an ethnischer und kultureller Vielfalt. Obwohl Begabung per Definition in allen Bevölkerungsgruppen gleichermaßen vorhanden ist, sind wir noch weit davon entfernt, dies in der Praxis zu erkennen. Obwohl allgemein bekannt ist, dass in allen kulturellen, ethnischen und sozioökonomischen Gruppen hohe Potentiale und Hochbegabte zu finden sind, gibt es weltweit keine ausreichenden Informationen aus erster Hand, wie die Ureinwohner die Begriffe Intelligenz und Begabung definieren. Auch, wie sie ihre Intelligenz und Begabung im Umgang mit ihren Stammesmitgliedern im Alltag leben. Über meinen indigenen Interviewpartner Lorenzo Gill, Angehörige des Stammes der Kogi Kultur in Sierra Nevada, Student und Stiftungsgründer in Bogotá/Kolumbien, weiß ich, dass dort für die Indigenen keine Begriffe für Intelligenz und Hochbegabung existieren.

En Colombia existe mas de 100 pueblos indígenas auto reconocidos como perteneciente a algún grupo étnico, de las cuales, 65 aun conservan sus lenguas propias, algunas en vía de extinción por diferentes motivos, desde el desplazamiento forzado, guerras en los territorios o por la apropiación de la lengua castellana como primera lengua.

Lorenzo Gil Gill pertenece al grupo ético Wiwa, ubicado en la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, norte de Colombia. Es ensayista, poeta, escritor, lingüista, asesor de ONG, realiza charlas sobre las culturas indígenas de su país y actualmente se encuentra estudiando Sociología en la Universidad Externado de Colombia.

LA ENTREVISTA

Çiğdem Gül: Querido Lorenzo, muchas gracias por permitirme entrevistarle en el otro extremo del mundo, en Bogotá / Colombia, a pesar de la actual pandemia mundial de coronavirus. Me gustaría comenzar nuestra conversación con un par de preguntas generales:

Una naturópata en Alemania, que también trata la medicina natural en países y culturas extranjeras, me dijo hace unos años que los indígenas de todo el mundo están conectados telepáticamente y pueden comunicarse entre sí por telepatía. Así es como sabrían dónde viven y están ubicados los otros pueblos indígenas. Incluso sabrían qué temas tratan los otros pueblos primitivos.

Lorenzo, ¿qué sabe usted sobre este asunto? ¿Qué opina de ello?

Lorenzo Gill: Gracias por la entrevista. En el conocimiento indígena, todos los pueblos indígenas y todas las poblaciones en general, somos hermanos, por eso la expresión de los líderes de la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta al referirse a ellos mismos como los “Hermanos Mayores” y “Hermanos Menores” para la civilización occidental. La referencia es que, para todas las poblaciones que no han perdido ese cordón umbilical con el planeta, siguen siendo los hermanos mayores, esa conexión espiritual, natural y armoniosa con el planeta, tanto en su práctica como en su conocimiento ancestral. En ese caso, los pueblos que aun permanecemos conectados a la madre tierra, nos entenderíamos perfectamente sobre muchos temas, no sé si específicamente mediante la telepatía, pero si mediante el planeta como fuente de conexión.

Çiğdem Gül: ¿Podría describirme las peculiaridades de su cultura indígena?

¿Qué idiomas y dialectos hablan los indígenas en Colombia?

Lorenzo Gill: Los pueblos indígenas de la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta son pueblos hermanas que desceinden de la civilización Tayrona, ya extinta por la invasión española. Estos 4 pueblos indígenas son, Wiwa, Kogui, Arhuaco y Kankuamos. Laspeculiaridades de estaos pueblos es que, en su conocimiento ancestral, la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta es el corazón del mundo. Çiğdem Gül: Nuestra red lleva años comprometida con los derechos humanos, la paz, los superdotados, las culturas y las minorías en todo el mundo. Los pueblos indígenas ocupan un lugar particularmente importante en mi corazón. ¿Cómo funciona en Colombia cuando los pueblos indígenas de su tribu o de otra abogan en favor de la curación de la tierra, la paz y la cultura?

Lorenzo Gill: En la Nueva Constitución Política de Colombia en 1991, se reconoce por primera vez unos derechos a los pueblos indígenas, por el cual si hemos podido hacer uso de esos derechos para proteger nuestros sistema de conocimiento, prácticas, salud y demás. Hay documentales sobre los pueblos indígenas de la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta que fomentan la armonía, respeto y volver a la espiritualidad con el planeta, ella es una mujer que da vida, por lo tanto, debe ser reconocida y se debe a aprender a convivir con ella.

Por invitación especial de la Fundación VQTV y su amigo francés Amel Sawsen para dar una conferencia sobre la situación actual de los „pueblos indígenas de Colombia“ en Cartagena de Indias

Çiğdem Gül: Hace seis años, cuando era docente, les mostré a mis alumnos una película documental muy conmovedora „Brasil en el ojo de los conquistadores“ („Brasilien im Blick der Eroberer“) de Luis Miranda, que también fue emitida en Europa en 2011 por la conocida cadena de televisión alemana-francesa ARTE. El documental da voz a los descendientes de los pueblos indígenas y permite ver las consecuencias de la colonización desde el punto de vista de los indígenas en Brasil. Me gustaría saber qué piensa, qué siente y cuál es su opinión al respecto. ¿Cree que ocurre lo mismo en Colombia? Si es así, ¿cuál cree que es el motivo por el que se intenta quitar ese espacio vital a estos pueblos?

Lorenzo Gill: Las consecuencias de la invasión europea es gravísima, en la actualidad no hay datos exactos de cuántos pueblos indígenas fueron exterminado en la época de la conquista, pero las cifras van desde 40 a 90 millones de personas. En el libro “La Otra Historia de los Estados Unidos” del autor Howard Zinn refleja ese proceso de extinción, sometimiento religioso, imposición ideológica hasta la esclavización. Estas consecuencias aún perduran en la actualidad, ya que la discrciminación, la exclusión, persecución religiosa y el desconocimiento indígena aún es desvalorizado. Es una consecuencia que si no se generan cambios, ayudará a exterminar todos los pueblos indígenas de América y en el mundo.

Çiğdem Gül: ¿Cómo superar los conflictos los miembros de su tribu y usted mismo dentro del entorno tribal? ¿Y los conflictos fuera de la comunidad tribal?

Lorenzo Gill: Tenemos nuestro sistema de justicia, este no tiene que ser el mismo del Estado, por ello, nuestra justicia es más pedagógica y preventiva. Por ello, sabemos que cometer error es una forma de conocer nuestra realidad, de tal forma que la aplicación de nuestra justicia tiene una relación con el territorio, la responsabilidad social y cultural. Ninguna sociedad está exenta de cometer errores, delitos, o fenómenos fuera de la regla social, por ello, cada comunidad tiene su propio sistema de justicia según sus usos y costumbres.

Çiğdem Gül: ¿Existen rituales comunes entre los pueblos indígenas que se viven de manera diferente dentro de la tribu, pero se basan en el mismo trasfondo espiritual? ¿Qué rituales se viven en su comunidad tribal y cómo?

Lorenzo Gill: Respetar y reconocer a la naturaleza como un ente vivo en el que, como humanos tenemos que tener reconocerla, respetarla, convivir con ella, de esa forma se generan diferentes ritualidades en diferentes comunidades, pero la relación con la naturaleza es la misma. Los pueblos indígenas de Amazonas han desarrollado la medicina tradicional, como medio de conexión con la madre tierra, esa práctica se llama “Yajé”. Para los pueblos indígenas de la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, más bien es a través de reconocerla por medio de “pagamentos”, este documental pueden verlo más: Por qué pagamos espiritualmente?

Çiğdem Gül: ¿Qué creencia tiene su tribu indígena? ¿Me puede contar al respecto?

Lorenzo Gill: Creen en la madre tierra, en la naturaleza como un organismo vivo que direcciona y organiza, la naturaleza tiene historia, tiene conflictos, tiene necesidades y nuestra tarea es aprender a convivir con ella.

Çiğdem Gül: ¿Podría decirme cómo podría imaginar su vida como indígena en la reserva en Colombia, pero en Europa?

Lorenzo Gill: Europa para mi es pensamiento y el razonamiento, pero le falta mucho desarrollar la espiritualidad, empatía con el planeta, la naturaleza. Podría ir a Europa conocer más.

Çiğdem Gül: ¿Cómo protegen ustedes su identidad tribal indígena, su historia, tradición, creencias y cultura? ¿Y cómo se transmiten ese conocimiento propio y culturalmente tan distinto dentro de la comunidad tribal? Por favor, cuénteme un ejemplo.

Lorenzo Gill: Por tradición, todos los integrantes de mi comunidad, deben transmitir la lengua materna, a través de ella, los conocimientos ancestrales, la historia y la identidad. Fomentar la importancia de la lengua indígena, las tradiciones y los principios de ser indígena, ese legado del cuidado de la madre tierra por medio de conocimientos milenarios.

Çiğdem Gül: ¿Cuál es la importancia de las joyas de la cabeza y el cuerpo y ciertas prendas de vestir para los pueblos indígenas? ¿Representan, por ejemplo, un símbolo estético, de jerarquía o de felicidad?

¿Es cierto que cuanto más decorado esté un miembro de la tribu, más acceso tiene a poderes superiores?

Lorenzo Gill: En mi comunidad no usamos muchos accesorios, pero los antiguos Tayronas si, se vestían de Oro porque representaban al Sol, el sol da vida, da energía, alimento, por ello el líder debe ser como el sol, en la actualidad ya no tenemos oro, en la época de la invasión española se llevaron todo nuestro oro. En la actualidad, solo nos vestimos de blanco.

Çiğdem Gül: ¿Cómo afecta a vuestra vida la comunicación con los animales y las plantas?

¿Qué efecto tiene el poder comunicarse con ellos?

Lorenzo Gill: No hablamos con los animales, porque concebimos que el lenguaje de la naturaleza es diferente, pero si se comunican con nosotros a través de señales y convivencia con ella. Los Mamos, nuestros líderes saben interpretar las señales, yo no soy Mamo.

Çiğdem Gül: ¿Qué me puede contar acerca de cómo trabajan los curanderos y los ancianos de las tribus en su comunidad y en otras comunidades tribales indígenas?

Lorenzo Gill: Son médicos tradicionales, usan la “medicina viva”, las plantas tienen un poder cuando aún están vivos, pensamos que los medicamentos del mundo moderno no soluciona los verdaderos problemas, siempre deja daños colaterales y la medicina es para curar, no para dañar una parte del cuerpo para arreglar otra parte del cuerpo. Por eso la importancia de la medicina tradicional es muy importante.

Çiğdem Gül: Querido Lorenzo, ¿puede contarme algo sobre usted?

Lorenzo Gill: Soy indígena Wiwa, amo la poesía, leer, viajar y ayudar a otros pueblos indígenas. Estudio sociología y lingüística, aunque trabajo en educación para seguir fortaleciendo sobre los pueblos indígenas, para proteger de la discriminación, persecución, asesinatos y elvido del Estado. Espero viajar algún día a Italia y al oriente de Europa.

Çiğdem Gül: ¿Cómo gestiona usted las diferencias entre su vida en la comunidad indígena en la tribu y su vida en la ciudad, incluida su vida estudiantil como futuro sociólogo, poeta, escritor y asesor de ONGs en la capital de Colombia?

Lorenzo Gill: La esencia y la hermandad entre los seres humanos es que tenemos casi los mismos problemas, las mismas crisis y la violencia es una realidad. Lo que creo que hace que pueda estar en diferentes comunidades, grupos sociales y pueda comprender problemas de diferentes niveles y escalas.

Çiğdem Gül: Hasta donde yo sé, no hay un término para „inteligencia“ y „superdotado“ en el idioma de los pueblos indígenas colombianos. ¿Cómo se describen estos términos? ¿Qué papel juegan estos temas en su comunidad tribal?

Lorenzo Gill: No hay palabras exactas en las lenguas indígenas. Quizás, la inteligencia pueda ser medido de cuánto y cómo te adaptes, crear armonía entre los seres humanos y la naturaleza. El que crea soluciones para ese proceso humano y natural, quizás se le pueda considerar superdotado. Hay que saber si podría sugerir que la palabra sabio si existe, es cuando alguien es inteligente pero administra su conocimiento sabiamente.

Çiğdem Gül: Querido Lorenzo,

In Colombia there are more than 100 indigenous peoples self-recognized as belonging to an ethnic group, of which 65 still retain their own languages, some on the way to extinction for different reasons, from forced displacement, wars in the territories or due to appropriation of the Castilian language as the first language.

Lorenzo Gill belongs to the Wiwa ethical group, located in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, northern Colombia. He is an essayist, poet, writer, linguist, NGO advisor, gives lectures on the indigenous cultures of his country and he studies Sociology at the Externado de Colombia University.

INTERVIEW

Çiğdem Gül: Dear Lorenzo, I am very happy that despite the current global coronavirus pandemic you enable me to conduct an interview with you while you are at the other end of the world — in Bogotá / Colombia.

I would like to start our conversation with general questions:

A female non-medical healing practitioner in Germany, who also deals with medicine in distant countries and cultures, told me a few years ago that indigenous people around the world are telepathically connected and can communicate telepathically with one another. They would also know where the other indigenous tribes are geographically located and where they live. They would even know what topics the other indigenous people are dealing with.

Lorenzo, do you have any experiences with such cases? What is your attitute towards this statement?

Lorenzo Gill: Thank you for the interview. In indigenous knowledge, indigenous people and population consider themselves as brothers. That is why the leaders of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta refer to themselves as the „Hermanos Mayores“ (Big brothers) and „Hermanos Menores“ (Young brothers) for Western civilization. The idea is that, in the population groups that have not lost that umbilical cord with the planet, these leaders continue to be the Big Brothers. In other words, they are that spiritual, natural and harmonious connection with the planet, both in their praxis and in their ancestral knowledge. As a result, people who remain connected to Mother Earth are able to understand each other perfectly on many areas. I do not know if this happens through telepathy specifically, but through the planet as the source of the connection itself.

Çiğdem Gül: Would you please describe the characteristics of your indigenous culture?

What languages and dialects do the indigenous people of Colombia speak?

Lorenzo Gill: The indigenous people of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta are brother communities that descended from the Tayrona civilisation, which was extinct after the Spanish invasion. These 4 indigenous groups are Wiwa, Kogui, Arhuaco and Kankuamos. The special feature of these people is that, in their ancestral knowledge, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is the heart of the world. Çiğdem Gül: Our „Intercultural Network For The Highly Gifted“ focuses on human rights, peace, the gifted, cultures and minorities worldwide for years. The indigenous people are particularly close to my heart. How does it look in practice when indigenous people from your or another tribe practice the healing of the earth, peace and culture?

Lorenzo Gill: In the new Political Constitution of Colombia from 1991, the indigenous people‘ s rights are recognized for the first time. Thank to this, this we have been able to use these rights to protect our knowledge system, practices, health and so on. There are documentaries about the indigenous people of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta that promote harmony, respect and a return to spirituality with the planet. The Earth is a life-giving woman, so it must be recognised as such and we must learn to live with it.

At the special invitation of the VQTV Foundation and his French friend Mrs. Amel Sawsen, Lorenzo Gill gave a lecture on the current situation of the „indigenous peoples of Colombia“ in Cartagena.

Çiğdem Gül: Six years ago, as a lecturer at the time, I showed my students a moving documentary film “Brazil in the View of the Conquerors” by Luis Miranda, which was also broadcasted on the well-known French-German TV channel ARTE in Europe in 2011. The documentation enables the descendants of the indigenous people have their say and describe the events of colonization in Brazil from an indigenous perspective. In this context, I am interested in your thoughts, feelings and opinions, whether, and if so, how and why your living space in Colombia is being threatened? It is being tried to be occupied and by whom?

Lorenzo Gill: The consequences of the European invasion are extremely serious. There are currently no exact figures on how many indigenous people were exterminated at the time of the conquest, but the figures range from 40 to 90 million people. In Howard Zinn’s book „A People’s History of the United States“ he reflects this process of extinction, religious submission, ideological imposition and enslavement. If no changes are made, the consequences will exterminate all the indigenous people of the Americas and in the world.

Çiğdem Gül: How do the members of your tribe and you cope with the historic conflicts in your tribal contexts and the conflicts outside of your tribal community?

Lorenzo Gill: We have our own justice system, which does not have to be the same as that of the State. Our justice is more pedagogical and preventive. We know that making a mistake is a way of knowing our reality, and that us why the application of our justice is related to the territory, social and cultural responsibility. No society is exempt from committing errors, crimes or phenomena outside the social norm. Thus, each community has its own system of justice according to its customs.

Çiğdem Gül: Do the indigenous peoples have common rituals that are lived differently locally, but are based on the same spiritual background? Which rituals are lived and how in your tribal community?

Lorenzo Gill: Respecting and recognizing nature as a living entity is very important. As humans we must recognize it, respect it, live with it. That is how different rituals are performed in different communities. But the relationship with nature is the same. The indigenous populations of the Amazon have developed traditional medicine as a way of connecting with Mother Earth. This practice is called „Yajé“. For the indigenous villages of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, it is a matter of recognising it by means of „pagamentos“. Çiğdem Gül: What is the belief of your indigenous tribal community? Can you please tell me about it?

Lorenzo Gill: We believe in Mother Earth, in nature as a living organism that directs and organizes. Nature has a history, it has conflicts, it has needs and our task is to learn to live with it.

Çiğdem Gül: Would you please be so kind and give someone like me, as an European an insight to your life as an indigenous person in the reserve of Colombia and the origins of your indigenous people?

Lorenzo Gill: Europe for me is thought and reasoning, but it lacks much development of spirituality, empathy with the planet and the nature. I could go to Europe to learn more.

Çiğdem Gül: How do you protect your indigenous tribal identity, history, tradition, beliefs and culture? And how is internal, culturally differentiated knowledge passed on within the tribal community? Please give me an example of this.

Lorenzo Gill: Traditionally, all members of my community must transmit the mother tongue, through which the ancestral knowledge, history and identity are also transmitted. Promoting the importance of the indigenous language, the traditions and the principles of being indigenous is part of the legacy of caring for Mother Earth through ancient knowledge.

Çiğdem Gül: What is the significance of head and body decorations and certain clothing for you indigenous people? Are they e. g. a sign of aesthetics or hierarchy or vitality?

Is it that the more one is adorned with these head and body decorations, the more one has access to higher powers?

Lorenzo Gill: In my community we do not use many accessories, but the ancient Tayrona did, they dressed in gold because they represented the Sun. The sun gives life, energy and nourishment and therefore the leader must resemble the sun. Today we no longer wear any gold. At the time of the Spanish invasion all our gold was taken. Nowadays, we only wear white.

Çiğdem Gül: How does flow your communication with animals and plants into your life?

What is the effect of communicating with them?

Lorenzo Gill: We don’t talk with the animals, but we understand that the language of nature is different. They do communicate with us through signs and coexistence with nature. I am not a Mamo.

Çiğdem Gül: What can you say about how the healers, medicine men and tribal elders work in your and other indigenous tribal communities?

Lorenzo Gill: They are traditional doctors who use „living medicine“. Plants have a power when they are still alive. We think that the medicines of the modern world do not solve the real problems and always leave collateral damage. Medicine is for healing, not for damaging one part of the body while fixing another part of the body. That is why the traditional medicine is so important.

Çiğdem Gül: Dear Lorenzo, can you please tell us something about yourself?

Lorenzo Gill: I am an indigenous Wiwa, I love poetry, reading, travelling and helping other indigenous people. I study sociology and linguistics, although I work on education to further strengthen the position of indigenous people, to protect them from discrimination, persecution, murder and the oblivion of the State. I hope to travel to Italy and Eastern Europe one day.

Çiğdem Gül: How do you manage to balance your life between the indigenous tribal on the country side and your city life? Including your life as a student as a budding sociologist, poet and writer life as well as a NGO consultant – in the capital of Colombia.

Lorenzo Gill: The essence and the brotherhood between human beings make me realise that we all have almost the same problems and the same crises. Violence is a reality. All this makes it possible for me to be in different communities, social groups and to understand problems of different levels and scales.

Çiğdem Gül: As far as I know there is no term for intelligence and giftedness in the language of the indigenous people in Colombia. How do you describe these terms? What role do these issues play in your tribal community?

Lorenzo Gill: There are no exact words in indigenous languages. Perhaps, intelligence can be measured in relation to how much and how you can adapt: it is the ability to create harmony between human beings and nature. Whoever the gifted people find solutions for the humans and natural process. We can say that the word “wise” does exist: it is when someone is intelligent and able to manage his/her knowledge wisely.

Çiğdem Gül: Dear Lorenzo, with this interview, you fulfilled a dream for me, to obtain first-hand information about indigenous peoples in Colombia. Thank you for the interview.
